Who are your ancestors? Did you even know that you have ancestors? If you forget them, who will re-member them. Unfortunately, we live in a society that wants us to forget our ANCESTORS -so they refer to them as DEAD.
Death, however, is not the end but the beginning of new life. Our problem is that we forget them. Interestingly, we take off holidays for people and events we don’t know.
Yet neglect those individuals we know that got us to today. Who have you forgotten waiting to be re-membered? Malidoma Patrice Some taught that we need to “fulfill our duties toward the dead to transform restlessness into rest, discontinuity into continuity, and homelessness into homecoming.” Do we think it’s luck why things turn out right in our life, or do we arrive safely at our destination? How foolish? Replace your shallow ways of remembering with one of substance.
Go beyond burying people and forgetting to celebrate their pure spirits. It’s beautiful to see the ritual of ancestralization because it reminds us to become mindful of the way we live. Our ancestors are allies who shepherd us through this life. Pour libation as an offering to a spirit, deity, or soul of a deceased person. Reclaim the practice of “ancestralization.” ~Dr. Robbin Alston
